BOTH GRAYSON AND THOMAS congratulated Kyle on the results of his mission. At Doctor Adler's suggestion, Katlyn spent three cycles in one of the healing chambers.

After her time in the chamber, she looked at Doctor Adler. “I can’t believe how great I feel. I have never felt so good. What did you do?”

“We removed the heavy metals and other impurities from your body. Plus, the nanites in the healing chamber repaired the damage to your organs. We have a purchase order to deliver healing chambers to the station so all the inhabitants of Carcerem can be similarly cured.”

Kyle met privately with Grayson and said he would not be re-enlisting. He quoted his enlistment papers as providing a free trip home at the end of his service period and asked if his wife could be included in the free ride home. Grayson agreed but hated losing a good marine.

Thomas asked Kyle and Katlyn to join his family for a farewell dinner. Suzanna and Katlyn enjoyed each other’s company. Toward the end of the meal, Thomas decided it was time to discuss Kyle’s and Katlyn’s future.

“If you ever get tired of farming, you could use a small portion of the credits from your wedding gift to purchase a spacecraft. You could use the ship to become merchant traders. There’s a real need for trade ships, and such a ship would be beneficial to both your planets.”

“Do you need an answer now?” Kyle asked.

“No, spend time on your homeworld with your family. Send me a message if you get bored with farming, and Wilson Enterprises will build you a ship.”

Katlyn whispered into Kyle’s ear. “I’ll consider your offer,” Kyle responded with a smile.

Grayson provided a shuttle. Kyle and Katlyn said their goodbyes. The military shuttle had jump capability, and they were soon on their way to Kyle’s home. Kyle and Katlyn were both excited about buying a spaceship at a future date. First, Katlyn would meet Kyle’s parents and his two older sisters.

The salvage crew representing Wilson Enterprises arrived and took inventory of all the battle debris. The lease at the space station was perfect for supporting their salvage operations and provided Carcerem with additional income.

The battle against the Hostis had been fought in the Rim. However, it did not take long for the results of the Demon’s participation to spread throughout the galactic. The stories of the Demon’s part in the battle were discussed over drinks in every bar whenever the navy granted shore leave. The reputation of the Demon continued to grow. Individuals no longer doubted the earlier stories told by pirates about the invincibility of the ship. The pirate ships fleeing previous confrontations with the Demon gained added respect from other ships.

It was time for the Demon to make the long jump to Fidem, the home planet of Thomas and his original crew. They would generally make several jumps and conduct trade along the way, but the ship was in no shape for the extra stress it would be subjected to for multiple jumps.
